gnome hang has become common to me. What I did usually just drop to console (ctrl+alt+f3) and killall gnome-shell. That basically restart gnome-shell while keeping all the session intact. I think this should work on other distros as well but the console arrangement might be different. In the past I think it's common for distros to run X in console no. 7, so you need to Ctrl+Alt+F7 to get back to your X session.
